The government of Bangladesh has strongly condemned the violent protest and attack on its Assistant High Commission in Agartala by members of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity on Monday. In a statement issued later that evening, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the impact on the safety and security of its diplomatic staff.

According to the statement, the attack left all members of the Assistant High Commission feeling deeply insecure. “This particular act in Agartala is a violation of the inviolability of diplomatic missions, as mandated by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961,” the ministry noted, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.

The Bangladeshi government also stressed that under international law, it is the responsibility of the host nation to protect diplomatic missions from any form of intrusion or harm. The ministry urged the Indian government to take immediate action, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and measures to prevent further violence. “The government of Bangladesh calls upon the government of India to take immediate action to address this incident, conduct a thorough investigation, and prevent any further acts of violence against the diplomatic missions of Bangladesh in India,” the statement read.

In addition, Bangladesh emphasised the need to ensure the safety of diplomats, non-diplomatic staff, and their families. The ministry reiterated the importance of maintaining the security and dignity of diplomatic missions, which play a crucial role in fostering bilateral relations.

The incident has raised concerns over the protection of diplomatic premises, with both nations expected to address the issue in line with their commitment to diplomatic norms and international conventions.
