The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has decided to delay the installation of Computed Tomography X-Ray (CTX) machines at airports, according to a recent  report. These advanced machines are expected to simplify the security screening process by allowing passengers to keep their electronic devices in hand luggage during checks, eliminating the need to place them in separate trays.

In a written response to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, shared that the BCAS initially planned to introduce CTX machines at new and major airports to enhance security and streamline procedures. However, he confirmed that the implementation has been postponed for the time being.

Responding to another query, Minister Mohol mentioned that the integration of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), into airport security systems is an ongoing process. He pointed out that several major airports are already equipped with advanced technologies designed to improve the passenger experience. These include the Digi Yatra face recognition-based access system, Queue Management System, Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), Remote Screening, and Dual-view X-Ray Baggage Inspection System (XBIS).

The minister also explained that the timeline for installing Full Body Scanners (FBS) has been revised. This adjustment is due to evolving technical specifications and standard operating procedures, which are being refined based on trials conducted by the BCAS at various airports. These ongoing efforts reflect a broader initiative to enhance security measures and streamline passenger movement through the adoption of new technologies.
