In a significant move to enhance border security, officials from the Border Security Force (BSF) have announced the implementation of a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) aimed at curbing the movement of drones and preventing the smuggling of narcotics and weapons along the Indo-Pak border.

Special DG, BSF, Western Command Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, revealed that the BSF has been closely monitoring drone activities along the border and has successfully shot down over 95 drones in the past year. Most of these incidents occurred on the Punjab side of the border, with additional instances in the Ganganagar area of Rajasthan.

Khurania emphasised the need for a proactive approach in tackling the growing drone threat. He highlighted that anti-social elements are increasingly using drones for smuggling operations, transporting narcotics, and weapons. The SOP, meticulously prepared by the BSF, outlines measures to counter these threats effectively.

BSF Jawans have undergone specialised training to familiarise themselves with drone technology, leading to increased vigilance and successful interception of illicit activities. Khurania noted that due to heightened surveillance, smugglers have shifted from using large drones with heavier payloads to smaller, more affordable drones with a capacity of 400 to 500 grams.

Praising the collaborative efforts with Punjab Police, Khurania acknowledged their crucial role in mapping vulnerable points along the border. As a result, the BSF has initiated plans to install CCTV cameras in identified grey areas, with the project set to conclude by March 2024. Additionally, there are considerations to expand fencing areas, pending completion of land acquisition and compensation formalities.

Khurania assured that the BSF is leveraging technology to enhance surveillance in key areas and affirmed the organisation’s commitment to securing the border. The collaborative efforts between the BSF and Punjab Police underscore a strategic approach to safeguarding the border region from illicit activities.
