The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been vocal in advocating for a special allowance, citing the challenging nature of their assignments
In a significant move to recognise the critical role of VIP security commandos within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the Union Government has approved a special allowance for personnel tasked with providing Z plus (ASL) and Z plus category protection.
The decision was announced by the Department of Expenditure under the Union Finance Ministry, following proposals from the Ministry of Home Affairs. As per the order, commandos assigned to these high-security duties will now receive a Special Security Allowance (SSA) amounting to 20 per cent of their basic pay.
Exclusivity Of Allowance
This benefit, however, will not extend to security personnel protecting VIPs under lower security categories, such as Z, Y+, Y, and X. The exclusion has raised questions within security circles, but officials have indicated that the high demands and risks associated with Z plus category duties warrant this differentiated compensation.
Addressing Long-Standing Demand
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been vocal in advocating for a special allowance, citing the challenging nature of their assignments. Their roles, which often involve round-the-clock protection for high-profile individuals, have been compared to those of elite units like the Special Protection Group (SPG) and National Security Guard (NSG), both of which receive enhanced allowances for their specialised responsibilities.
The new allowance acknowledges the operational pressures faced by CAPF commandos, whose duties require heightened vigilance and preparedness in high-stress environments.
Strategic Impact On Morale
The move is expected to boost the morale of CAPF personnel deployed in such critical roles. By formally recognising the unique challenges they face, the Centre aims to create parity between CAPF commandos and their counterparts in other elite security forces.
This decision reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening national security and supporting those at the forefront of protecting some of the country’s most vital figures.
