Chandigarh Launches Major Fire Safety Audit Of 25,000 Buildings

The comprehensive audit will be conducted on a wide variety of structures, including schools, hospitals, offices, factories, malls, and high-rise residential buildings

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has initiated a large-scale fire safety audit covering more than 25,000 buildings across the city, a move designed to address the risks posed by substandard equipment and inadequate preparedness among occupants.

The comprehensive audit will be conducted on a wide variety of structures, including schools, hospitals, offices, factories, malls, and high-rise residential buildings. The initiative was launched in response to growing concerns that low-quality firefighting equipment, often installed without strict regulations governing suppliers, could fail during an emergency, putting lives at risk.

To tackle this, the Municipal Corporation will empanel certified third-party agencies to perform regular inspections. These agencies will be responsible for checking firefighting systems, verifying their compliance with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and assessing whether building occupants are prepared to handle emergencies.

Beyond the technical inspections, the programme also includes a critical training component. The empaneled agencies will provide guidance to building residents, staff, and workers on how to respond effectively during a fire, aiming to reduce potential harm and ensure a structured emergency response.

Through this two-pronged approach—combining rigorous equipment checks with occupant training—the Municipal Corporation aims to strengthen fire safety across Chandigarh. The initiative seeks to reduce risks and promote a culture of safety for all types of buildings throughout the city.
