The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken over security duties at the Parliament complex in New Delhi, replacing 150 personnel from the Delhi Police. Among them were 54 women personnel who were previously deployed following a security breach on December 13 last year.
This transition came about after a request from the Lok Sabha Secretariat to withdraw the Delhi Police personnel from the Parliament premises. An internal communication dated April 26, from the Joint-Director (security ops) of Parliament, directed the Delhi Police to withdraw their staff. It stated that the CISF would assume responsibility for security checkpoints at Parliament starting from 8 am on April 29, in line with existing security protocols.
According to officials, approximately 75 Delhi Police personnel are still stationed within Parliament, with all 150 being asked to report to the main security line in Bapudham for reassignment.
This development follows the Central government’s directive to the CISF to conduct a comprehensive survey of the Parliament premises for regular deployment in the aftermath of the security breach in December. During that incident, individuals breached security, entering the Parliament Hall and deploying smoke canisters. Subsequently, an inquiry committee, led by CRPF Director General Anish Dayal Singh, identified security lapses during visitor frisking at entry points. Eight Delhi Police security personnel were suspended in connection with the breach.
In response, the CISF dispatched a contingent of 140 personnel, overseen by an Assistant Commandant, for training on Parliament premises ahead of the Budget Session. They joined forces with the Delhi Police to conduct visitor and baggage frisking, a task previously undertaken solely by Delhi Police personnel.
