A Comoros-flagged oil tanker, the “Prestige Falcon,” has capsized off the coast of Oman, leaving all 16 crew members missing. The crew includes 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans, according to Oman’s Maritime Security Centre.

The incident was reported on Tuesday, a day after the vessel sank. The ship remains submerged and inverted in the waters near Oman’s industrial port of Duqm. Authorities have yet to confirm if the vessel has stabilised or if there are any oil leaks.

The 117-meter-long oil products tanker, built in 2007, was on its way to the Yemeni port of Aden when the accident happened. These smaller tankers are typically used for short coastal voyages.

Omani authorities have launched a search-and-rescue operation in coordination with maritime authorities. As of now, no survivors have been found. The ship overturned 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah, close to the port of Duqm. This port, located on Oman’s southwest coast, is near major oil and gas projects, including a significant oil refinery that is part of Duqm’s extensive industrial zone—Oman’s largest single economic project.

In a post on social media platform X, the Maritime Security Centre confirmed, “The crew of ‘Prestige Falcon’ comprised 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans.” The center also mentioned that the vessel remains “submerged, inverted” but did not provide details on whether it had stabilized or if there were any oil leaks.

Shipping data showed that the tanker was heading to the Yemeni port of Aden when it capsized near Duqm. The port of Duqm is an important hub on Oman’s southwest coast, close to significant oil and gas projects, including a major oil refinery within Duqm’s vast industrial zone, which is the country’s largest economic project.

Omani authorities are continuing their search-and-rescue efforts, hoping to find survivors from the ill-fated “Prestige Falcon.”
