Alongside the MRCC, Singh also virtually launched two other significant initiatives: the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC), located at the Chennai Port, and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently inaugurated the newly-constructed Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in Chennai. This state-of-the-art facility is set to enhance the effectiveness and coordination of maritime rescue operations, particularly for mariners and fishermen in distress at sea. The MRCC is equipped with the latest terrestrial and satellite systems for distress monitoring and advanced communication tools, ensuring real-time management of alerts. Highly trained ICG personnel, specializing in search and rescue operations, will manage these efforts, ready to deploy rescue aircraft, ships, and other facilities as needed.
Alongside the MRCC, Singh also virtually launched two other significant initiatives: the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC), located at the Chennai Port, and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry.
The RMPRC has been established to provide a robust response to marine oil pollution incidents, furthering the country’s commitment to environmental protection. The centre, which is operational 24/7, is managed by ICG personnel and will also serve as a training hub for various organizations, including ports, oil handling agencies, and government bodies. The training will focus on pollution response techniques, with practical exercises involving the deployment of oil handling equipment in real-time scenarios. The facility also extends its training services to personnel from friendly nations, helping them develop capabilities to combat oil pollution at sea.
The newly launched Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry is another vital addition to India’s maritime security infrastructure. The enclave will host Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter squadrons, both indigenously built and capable of performing a range of missions, including maritime patrol and search and rescue operations. These helicopters can operate both from land and from Coast Guard ships patrolling the sea, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the Puducherry and southern Tamil Nadu coastlines.
These developments highlight India’s ongoing efforts to bolster maritime security and environmental protection. The establishment of these new facilities underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and responding swiftly to emergencies at sea.
