Disha Naik from Goa’s Mopa is India’s first female recruit in an Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit. Naik started training in 2021 at Manohar International Airport
In a historic first, Disha Govind Naik, hailing from Casarvarnem, Pernem in Goa, has carved her name in the annals of Indian aviation history as the country’s inaugural certified female firefighter in the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit.
Disha’s journey to this historic achievement was marked by constant support from her parents, who, undeterred by the male-dominated nature of the profession, encouraged her aspirations from her school days. Undaunted by stereotypes, she pursued her dream and formally applied for a position in the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Department at Manohar International Airport (MIA) in November 2021. Her certification, a testament to her determination, was granted on July 1, 2022.
The path to becoming a certified firefighter was no easy feat. Disha underwent an intensive six-month training program in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, honing her skills to operate a crash fire tender (CFT) designed for aircraft rescue and firefighting.
In an industry where gender disparities persist, Disha faced rigorous evaluation by a special board of experts tasked with assessing her driving and operational skills. Her stellar performance during these assessments solidified her position as India’s first-ever certified female firefighter authorised to operate the CFT.
Since July 2022, Disha Naik has been serving at the Manohar International Airport in Goa, not only realising her dream but also breaking down barriers for women in the field. GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL) officially recognised and celebrated her achievement, with CEO R V Sheshan emphasising the organisation’s commitment to gender diversity and equal growth opportunities.
Disha Govind Naik’s accomplishment stands as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring women, challenging societal expectations and showcasing the pivotal role women can play in traditionally male-dominated professions. Her journey exemplifies the intersection of women empowerment and the crucial role women can play in ensuring safety and security in diverse sectors.
