Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone on Monday for India’s first Centre for Cyber Operations & Security in Chandigarh’s Sector 17, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to combat cybercrime. With an estimated cost of Rs 88 crore, this initiative, driven by Chandigarh Police and supported by the Union Home Ministry, aims to address the growing threat of cybercrime, particularly against women and children.
The ceremony, attended by Chandigarh administrator Banwarilal Purohit, DGP (UT) Praveer Ranjan, MP Kirron Kher, Adviser Dharam Pal, and other officials, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the central and state governments to enhance cybersecurity measures.
Following the event, the Central government released Rs 22 crore to the UT administration for the construction of the center, which has been entrusted to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Superintendent of Police (cyber) Ketan Bansal emphasised the importance of the new facility, stating, “The Centre for Cyber Operations & Security will be a pioneering facility, catering to the evolving cyber threats. It will serve as a vital resource for law enforcement agencies in Chandigarh and neighboring states.”
The DRDO is expected to commence construction shortly, with a projected completion timeline of eight months. This development underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its cybersecurity infrastructure and fostering collaboration between government agencies to tackle cyber threats effectively.
