India & Australia Strengthen Ties At 15th Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue

The meeting comes at a pivotal time in India-Australia relations, as 2025 will mark the fifth anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries

On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was received by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong at the Australian Parliament House in Canberra for the 15th India-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue. The day’s proceedings began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, a traditional Aboriginal ritual, symbolising a respectful acknowledgment of the land. This warm reception set the stage for a constructive and forward-looking dialogue between the two ministers.

“Australia and India are close partners with strong strategic, economic, and community ties. It is significant to note that almost one million Australians trace their heritage to India,” said the Australian foreign ministry in a press release. The statement underscored the shared vision of both nations for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

The meeting comes at a pivotal time in India-Australia relations, as 2025 will mark the fifth anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. This dialogue allowed both sides to review their progress and outline priorities for the next phase of their partnership. Key areas of discussion included science and technology, clean energy, trade, investment, and enhancing defence and maritime security cooperation.

As part of Australia’s commitment to building resilient and diversified economic partnerships, Minister Wong acknowledged India’s position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. “India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy and is on track to be the third largest by the end of the decade. India is thus an essential partner for Australia as the latter is set to diversify its trade links and secure its supply chains,” she noted.

In addition to the formal dialogue, Minister Jaishankar also met with Australian Parliamentarians and other dignitaries, facilitating more direct engagement and collaboration across different fields. This visit aligns with Australia’s focus on building strong regional alliances, and with India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with partners in the Indo-Pacific.

The Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue, now in its 15th iteration, highlights the maturing relationship between India and Australia. The meeting not only reinforced existing commitments but also underscored a shared vision for navigating regional challenges together.
