Industries such as manufacturing, government, and banking bore the major impact, with malware families like COIMINER, MIMIKATZ, and POWLOAD posing significant risks.
India has turned into top five countries worldwide grappling with an increasingly concerning cyber threat landscape, particularly in terms of malware and online banking threats, according to a mid-year cybersecurity report by Trend Micro.
The report reveals that India accounted for 5.5% of global ransomware detections, with a whopping 90,945 instances identified in the first half of 2023. Vijendra Katiyar, Country Manager for India & SAARC at Trend Micro, emphasised the critical juncture India finds itself in cybersecurity. He stated, “As cybercriminals become more sophisticated, our digital defences are constantly being challenged. The rise of ransomware and malware attacks has had a significant impact on key sectors of our economy.”
Katiyar urged organisations to adopt a proactive approach in anticipating threats and strengthening their defences with a unified cybersecurity platform to stay ahead of the evolving threat landscape.
Globally, the report noted that over 85 billion threats were blocked in the first half of 2023, encompassing 37 billion email threats and 46 billion malicious files. The top three industries worldwide that detected the highest number of ransomware attacks were identified as banking, retail, and transportation. As nations grapple with the relentless evolution of cyber threats, the imperative for robust cybersecurity measures becomes increasingly evident.
