Indian Navy’s Maritime Security Operations Reach 100-Day Milestone Under ‘Op Sankalp‘

Operating across three key areas including the Gulf of Aden and adjoining regions, the Arabian Sea, and off the East Coast of Somalia, the Indian Navy has deployed over 5000 personnel at sea

The Indian Navy has marked a significant milestone in its ongoing maritime security operations with the completion of 100 days under the banner of ‘Operation Sankalp’, responding to the implications of the Israel-Hamas conflict in the maritime domain. Initiated since mid-December 2023, the operation has witnessed a robust reorientation and expansion to address evolving threats.

A recent official press release highlights the Navy’s proactive role during the hijacking incident involving the Malta-flagged Bulk Carrier MV Ruen on December 14 last year. Over the past 100 days, the Indian Navy has responded to 18 incidents, positioning itself as the ‘First Responder’ and ‘Preferred Security Partner’ in the Indian Ocean Region.

Operating across three key areas including the Gulf of Aden and adjoining regions, the Arabian Sea, and off the East Coast of Somalia, the Indian Navy has deployed over 5000 personnel at sea, with more than 450 ship days involving over 21 ships, and approximately 900 hours of flying by maritime surveillance aircraft to counter maritime threats.

The surge in piracy since 2008 has necessitated a concerted effort in the Indian Ocean Region, with the Indian Navy taking a leading role in addressing security challenges. Notably, the operation has resulted in the safeguarding of over 110 lives, including 45 Indian seafarers, the escorting of critical commodities totaling 15 lakh tons, the seizure of over 3000 kgs of narcotics, and the assurance of presence to over 450 merchant vessels.

The Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) based in Gurugram has emerged as a pivotal hub for information exchange, facilitating coordinated efforts to enhance maritime security. Moreover, collaborative missions with the Indian Air Force and national agencies showcase the synergy and interoperability among services.

The Indian Navy’s calibrated response and unwavering commitment during ‘Op Sankalp’ have gained international recognition for its role in safeguarding maritime interests, countering threats, combating piracy, and disrupting narcotics trade in the Indian Ocean Region. The Navy’s dedication to the principle of ‘Safety of Life at Sea’ reaffirms its position as a responsible maritime force, prioritizing the well-being of seafarers regardless of nationality.
