India and France share a longstanding and deep strategic relationship, with a focus on defense and maritime security
The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate, INS Talwar, docked at La Réunion on October 27, marking an important milestone in India-France maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The visit is part of INS Talwar’s larger operational deployment and aims to strengthen the India-France partnership on regional maritime security.
During the visit, cross-deck interactions and exercises with the French Navy are planned to foster closer ties between the two naval forces. In a gesture of goodwill, INS Talwar also opened its decks to the Indian diaspora on October 27, allowing Pravasi Bharatiya to visit the vessel.

INS Talwar’s presence in La Réunion further underscores this commitment to shared security interests.
Commissioned on June 18, 2003, INS Talwar operates under the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet, led by the Western Naval Command. Commanded by Captain Jithu George, the frigate recently participated in the IBSAMAR VIII multilateral exercise in South Africa, showcasing India’s collaborative defense efforts. This visit follows the frigate’s recent stopover in Mombasa, Kenya, on September 22, where the crew engaged in professional exchanges and joint drills with Kenyan naval personnel, reinforcing India’s regional partnerships.
As the lead ship of the Talwar-class, INS Talwar is 125 meters long and capable of speeds up to 30 knots. It carries a suite of advanced weapons, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, and an electronic warfare system. With the ability to host helicopters such as the Kamov 31 and Kamov 28, the frigate supports a range of missions, from search-and-rescue to anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol.
INS Talwar’s visit to La Réunion not only bolsters diplomatic and defense ties but also demonstrates the Indian Navy’s commitment to enhancing security and cooperation in the region.
