Kapurthala Mandates CCTV Installation, Tenant Registration For PG Owners To Boost Public Safety

The order stipulates that the cameras must remain operational at all times, with the recordings maintained for a minimum of one month

In a bid to enhance public safety and ensure accountability, Kapurthala District Magistrate Amit Kumar Panchal has issued directives under Section 163 of the Indian Citizens Security Code-2023, making it mandatory for paying guest (PG) accommodation owners to install CCTV cameras on their premises. The move aims to bolster security and improve monitoring within the district.

The order stipulates that the cameras must remain operational at all times, with the recordings maintained for a minimum of one month. Non-compliance with these regulations could result in legal consequences for the property owners.

In addition to installing surveillance systems, PG owners are required to register comprehensive details of their tenants at the nearest police station or post. This registration must include the property owner’s name, address, contact information, and a photocopy of a government-issued identity document such as an Aadhaar card.

District Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal emphasised the importance of gathering detailed tenant information. “Property owners must provide the name and contact number of their tenants, the address of the institution where the tenant is studying or working, along with supporting evidence, their permanent residential address, and a copy of their Aadhaar card or another government-issued photo ID,” he stated.

The directive underscores the district administration’s efforts to maintain a robust security framework, particularly in areas with high tenant turnover. The measures are also expected to aid law enforcement in tracking individuals in case of criminal incidents or emergencies.

Local residents and property owners have expressed mixed reactions to the order. While some have welcomed the initiative as a necessary step to ensure safety, others have raised concerns about the additional responsibilities placed on landlords.

The administration has assured that these measures are in the interest of public safety and will help foster a secure living environment for residents and tenants alike. The directive highlights the growing emphasis on using technology and detailed record-keeping to enhance law and order in urban areas.
