In response to the rising number of fires in the Capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) issued an advisory on Thursday to health facilities under its jurisdiction. The advisory directs these facilities to take several fire safety measures, including inspecting fire-fighting equipment, conducting electrical load audits, and installing automatic sprinklers in ICUs to prevent and control fires.
The MCD has also extended similar instructions to schools, community centres, multi-level parking lots, and zonal offices. Health facilities have been asked to prepare a report on the actions taken and submit it by May 31.
To enhance fire safety, health facilities are required to establish a maintenance schedule for fire safety equipment. This includes monthly checks on fire extinguishers and quarterly tests of fire alarms and hydrants. Additionally, smoke detectors and fire alarms should be installed throughout the premises, especially in patient rooms, hallways, and common areas.
The advisory specifically calls for the installation of automatic sprinkler systems and accessible hosepipes in ICUs and operation theatres. It also mandates the conducting of fire and evacuation drills to ensure that staff, doctors, and patients are prepared to respond effectively in an emergency.
Furthermore, the MCD has instructed the relevant authorities to secure an annual renewal of the fire safety no-objection certificate from the fire department. They must also develop a comprehensive evacuation plan to be followed in the event of a fire.
These measures aim to enhance fire safety across various facilities, ensuring the protection and well-being of all individuals in the Capital.
