BEL, a public sector unit operating under the Ministry of Defence, specialises in manufacturing electronic products and systems for various forces
The Public Works Department (PWD) of New Delhi has entrusted Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) with the maintenance of CCTV cameras across the city, according to a senior official’s statement. A control command center has been established at the headquarters to oversee the operation of these cameras. This decision is seen as crucial for ensuring the smooth functioning of the surveillance system, which comprises approximately 2.4 lakh cameras installed under the Delhi government’s initiative.
Initiated in 2018 by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the CCTV camera scheme aims to enhance safety measures in the city. The installation of these cameras was deemed a significant step towards deterring criminal activities and fostering a sense of security among residents.
Despite the scheme’s objectives, there have been several instances of damage and theft of these cameras, as per officials. These incidents highlighted the importance of regular maintenance and timely repair to uphold the effectiveness of the surveillance infrastructure.
BEL, a public sector unit operating under the Ministry of Defence, specialises in manufacturing electronic products and systems for various forces. In 2021, Chief Minister Kejriwal highlighted Delhi’s global prominence in terms of CCTV density per square mile, emphasizing the significance of the government’s CCTV scheme, particularly in enhancing women’s safety.
Government authorities have asserted that all CCTV feeds are secure, with hardware being monitored by the community, access granted only to authorised users, and the system equipped with automatic health checks.
