As the holiday shopping season reaches its peak, the inaugural Retail Worker Safety Report from Motorola Solutions sheds light on escalating safety concerns among retail workers and managers in their respective stores. The survey, focusing on U.S. respondents, underscores a notable surge in incidents such as petty theft (54%), grab-and-run incidents (35%), and hostile customer interactions (31%) over the past year. Almost two-thirds of respondents express varying degrees of concern regarding their personal safety at work during this bustling shopping season.

Sharon Hong, Vice President of Ecosystem Solutions at Motorola Solutions, emphasises the urgency of addressing safety worries for retail staff. She states, “Sales associates and managers shouldn’t have to worry about their safety on top of everything else.” The report advocates for the adoption of technological solutions to not only enhance safety awareness but also to detect illicit activities and facilitate swift communication with colleagues and first responders during critical incidents.

Key Findings Explored in Detail

Communication Channels During Emergencies: The survey reveals a prevalent reliance on traditional, low-tech communication methods, including landline telephones (58%) and PA systems (45%). Respondents express a desire for more efficient communication channels that can establish prompt connections with public safety officials.

Technology’s Role in Safety: While retail stores currently employ video security systems (76%), alarm systems (64%), and merchandise sensors (44%), there is a notable demand for additional technologies. These include the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) for gun detection (42%), access control systems for locking doors during threats (36%), panic buttons for immediate assistance (30%), and license plate readers to identify vehicles linked to criminal activity (30%).

Evolution of Safety Protocols: Acknowledging the need for enhanced safety measures, the report indicates that approximately 36% of retailers have introduced new worker safety initiatives over the past year. Changes encompass increased emergency response training (49%), more timely communication regarding in-store incidents (41%), and the addition of security personnel (33%).

Impact on Employee Morale and Retention: The report underscores a correlation between feelings of safety and employee retention. A significant 26% of respondents have contemplated leaving the retail industry due to safety concerns. Recognising the pivotal role of safety and security measures, retailers are urged to invest in these aspects to bolster employee morale and retention.

As the retail industry continues to be a cornerstone of the U.S. economy, the adoption of cutting-edge technology, improvement of communication channels, and the implementation of comprehensive preparedness training are seen as crucial components in creating safer environments for both retail employees and shoppers alike.
