The Telangana government plans to commence the project by laying the foundation stone in September
The Telangana government has announced an ambitious plan to build India’s first and largest Artificial Intelligence (AI) city on the outskirts of Hyderabad. This initiative aims to foster an AI ecosystem and attract leading companies to establish their AI centers in the region. State Information Technology Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu emphasized Hyderabad’s prominence as a top information technology (IT) hub, stating, “Hyderabad has been known as a top information technology (IT) hub in the country. Now, we want to promote it as the AI capital of India.”
The Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) has identified 200 acres of land along the Outer Ring Road in Maheshwaram, Serilingampally, Chevella, and Ibrahimpatnam mandals for the development of the AI city. Minister Babu pointed out that, while other states have proposed similar projects, they have not yet been implemented. He highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s December 2023 announcement to create an AI city in Lucknow, noting that it only allocated 40 acres and aims for a 2030 completion date. In contrast, Telangana’s proposed AI city will cover five times the area of Lucknow’s project and is slated for completion by 2028, potentially making it India’s first AI city.
The Telangana government plans to commence the project by laying the foundation stone in September. As a precursor to this event, the state will host a Global AI Summit at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre on September 5 and 6. Minister Babu elaborated on the summit’s objectives: “The summit, with its theme ‘Making AI Work for Everyone’, aims at exploring how Artificial Intelligence can benefit and empower society.” He mentioned that the event will feature keynote addresses and sessions by global AI experts, technology leaders, policymakers, and academicians. The summit is expected to attract over 50 speakers and 2,000 delegates from various sectors.
Discussions at the summit will focus on critical aspects of AI, including its potential for societal benefits, the importance of safe AI practices, AI’s transformative impact across industries, and its role in driving innovation. In a bid to attract international interest and investment, Minister Sridhar Babu, along with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and senior officials, will visit the United States from August 3-11. “We are going to meet top global IT players and invite them to the Global AI Summit, besides seeking their investments in the AI city,” Babu stated.
The envisioned AI city in Hyderabad will encompass diverse sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, law enforcement, and mobility, where AI technology is crucial. Minister Babu underscored the inclusive approach taken by the Telangana government, stating, “Our government has co-designed the AI framework document with the help of pioneers of industry, academia, start-ups, and policy advisors to provide a conducive environment – supporting the ideation, development, and responsible deployment of Artificial Intelligence for social impact.”
Through this initiative, Telangana aims to position Hyderabad as a leading AI destination, fostering innovation and attracting significant investments in the growing AI sector.
