On Friday, tensions escalated at the Punjab-Haryana border as police deployed tear gas to disperse protesting farmers. Amidst the chaos, a 63-year-old farmer tragically passed away from a heart attack while participating in the demonstration at the Shambhu border.

The farmers’ protest has gained momentum, with multiple unions calling for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ and engaging in a ‘chakka jam’ across major Indian roads. The situation has led to the imposition of Section 144 in Delhi and the National Capital Region, impacting traffic flow, particularly at the Gazipur border.

Despite marathon talks between farmer union leaders and government officials yielding no breakthrough on Thursday, the farmers remain resolute in their demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce.

The unfortunate demise of the farmer, identified as Gian Singh from Gurdaspur district, highlights the seriousness of the protest and the challenges faced by the farmers. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal expressed frustration with the deployment of paramilitary forces, emphasising the peaceful nature of their protest.

Political figures like Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have shown support for the farmers, condemning the use of drones and internet shutdowns in Haryana. Meanwhile, discussions between the Centre and farmer unions continue, with the latter pressing for an MSP guarantee law and implementation of recommendations by agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan.

The protest, which initially began with farmers from Punjab, has garnered support from neighbouring states, leading to heavy security measures and disruptions in Delhi-NCR. As tensions continue, both sides are engaged in a standoff, with farmers determined to make their voices heard despite the challenges they face.

In response to the crackdown by Haryana Police, farmer unions have called for various forms of protest, including demonstrations at toll plazas and a ‘rail roko’ initiative. These actions show the desperation of the farmers and the escalating nature of the protest as they continue their fight for their rights.
