Following the recent ambush on two Army vehicles in Poonch, resulting in the martyrdom of five soldiers and injuries to two, concerns are mounting over the expanding presence of terrorists in the region
Security and defence experts are urging immediate reinforcement of the security management and intelligence network along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Jammu region. This plea comes in response to a series of terror incidents that have claimed the lives of 59 individuals, including 24 security personnel and 28 terrorists, throughout the year.
Following the recent ambush on two Army vehicles in Poonch, resulting in the martyrdom of five soldiers and injuries to two, concerns are mounting over the expanding presence of terrorists in the region. Retired Lt Gen Paramjit Singh, former head of the XVI corps, stressed the need for preparedness in challenging terrains and called for a thorough analysis of the continuous setbacks in the area.
Highlighting an illicit nexus between smugglers, drug cartels, and individuals within the system, Lt Gen Singh emphasised the urgency to dismantle this network. Defence experts, including Col (retd) S S Pathania highlighted the concern over a comprehensive review of LoC management and intelligence networks to address the escalating security threats.Expressing concern over the terror incidents, defence expert Col (retd) S S Pathania said, “It is the second incident in the last two months. This region was peaceful until two years ago. In the last two years, 24 soldiers were martyred here. Why is it happening? Why have terrorists been so emboldened?” .
The experts advocated a return to basic jungle warfare training and a reduced dependence on technical inputs. Col Pathania questioned the surge in terrorist activities in a previously peaceful region and emphasised the imperative to fortify LoC security measures. Capt Gaur expressed concerns over Pakistan’s attempts to revive terrorism in the region and called for a robust overhaul of intelligence networks to eliminate terrorists.“The LoC security management should be foolproof and the intelligence network should be strengthened,” he said.
The recent ambush in Poonch marks the second incident in the past two months, prompting experts to call for immediate attention to the LoC’s security management and intelligence infrastructure. They underscored the need for a foolproof security system and strengthened intelligence capabilities to effectively counter the evolving security challenges in the region.
