The aircraft landed safely without incident, and none of the more than 90 passengers or crew on board were injured
An Air India flight to Indore was forced to return to Delhi shortly after take-off on 31 August following a fire warning in one of its engines. The airline confirmed that the cockpit crew received a fire indication in the right engine of flight AI2913, prompting them to follow emergency protocols and turn the aircraft back to Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The aircraft landed safely without incident, and none of the more than 90 passengers or crew on board were injured. Air India said the crew acted in accordance with standard safety procedures, shutting down the affected engine before making the precautionary return.
Once on the ground, passengers were deboarded and later transferred to another aircraft arranged by the airline. The replacement flight took off later in the morning and completed the journey to Indore with only a limited delay. The aircraft involved in the alert has been grounded for a full technical inspection, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been notified.
The incident is the latest in a series of technical issues faced by carriers in India in recent months, highlighting the close scrutiny airlines face from aviation regulators. Industry experts note that while such fire warnings can often be caused by sensor malfunctions or other technical anomalies, crews are trained to treat them as genuine until inspections confirm otherwise.
For passengers, the disruption was managed with minimal impact, though some expressed concern over the mid-air alert. Air India said it appreciated travellers’ cooperation and emphasised that safety remained its top priority.
The DGCA is expected to review inspection findings before the aircraft is cleared to return to service. The regulator has stepped up monitoring of maintenance and safety compliance in the sector amid the rapid growth of India’s aviation market, which now handles one of the highest volumes of domestic flights worldwide.
