As businesses pour investments into artificial intelligence, many leaders remain sceptical about its impact on enterprise productivity. While generative AI has made significant strides, a gap persists between its potential and practical implementation. May Habib, CEO of Writer, recently shared insights on why AI adoption has been slower than expected and how companies can unlock its full value.

Speaking with Bloomberg’s Caroline Hyde, Habib noted that many business leaders feel AI has not delivered the anticipated productivity gains. A survey of Fortune 500 executives revealed that 71 per cent were disappointed with their AI initiatives. Habib attributed this to outdated development methods, where IT teams build solutions that fail to align with business needs. However, her firm, Writer, focuses on bridging this divide by fostering collaboration between IT and business units to create AI tools that integrate seamlessly with enterprise workflows.

She emphasised that AI models require more than just computing power; they must leverage structured and unstructured data to operate effectively within enterprise settings. Unlike many AI firms prioritising reasoning models, Writer concentrates on self-evolving models that update in real-time based on user feedback rather than requiring extensive retraining. Habib argued that this approach is crucial for achieving advanced AI capabilities that can drive business value.

Addressing workforce challenges, she acknowledged the ongoing shortage of AI talent, which has prompted Writer to expand internationally with new offices in London and Singapore. She also highlighted the competitive nature of the AI startup market, where many companies struggle to secure enterprise clients. To strengthen its platform, Writer is actively exploring acquisitions to integrate innovative solutions from smaller firms.
