Apple has rolled out its latest software update, iOS 18, introducing advanced anti-theft measures aimed at strengthening iPhone security. These updates focus on safeguarding user data if a device is stolen and reinforcing overall privacy. The key enhancements include a new “inactivity reboot” feature and an upgraded Stolen Device Protection option, as reported by 404 Media.
Jiska Classen, a researcher at the Hasso Plattner Institute, showcased the inactivity reboot feature in a video. This function automatically triggers a device restart if an unlocked iPhone remains unused for three consecutive days. Once rebooted, the iPhone enters a secure state known as “Before First Unlock.”
In this state, the encryption keys that protect user data are locked within the device’s Secure Enclave Processor, preventing unauthorised access with basic forensic tools, even if the iPhone is powered on. This security layer aims to protect sensitive data from theft by rendering unauthorised data extraction efforts ineffective.
Although the reboot feature significantly boosts data security, it could pose challenges for law enforcement agencies attempting to retrieve data from criminal devices. However, the three-day inactivity window typically allows investigators sufficient time to collaborate with forensic experts, ensuring lawful data retrieval is still possible.
The Stolen Device Protection feature has also been enhanced.
