iPhone users urged to install updated patch with new build number to resolve Advanced Data Protection issue
Apple has reissued the iOS 17.6.1 update for eligible iPhones to fix a major security flaw that was introduced in the initial release. All users on the previous version are strongly advised to install the re-released update, which now carries a different build number (21G101).
The iOS 17.6.1 update was first rolled out on 7 August. However, after identifying a significant security flaw, Apple released an updated version of the same patch on Monday to address the issue.
According to the official changelog, “This update includes important bug fixes and addresses an issue that prevents enabling or disabling Advanced Data Protection.”
Apple further clarified, “Advanced Data Protection is designed to maintain end-to-end encryption for shared content as long as all participants have Advanced Data Protection enabled. This level of protection is supported in most iCloud sharing features, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, iCloud Drive shared folder and shared Notes.”
The security flaw had prevented some users who installed the original iOS 17.6.1 update from enabling Advanced Data Protection, even if it was active on their iCloud account. With the re-release of the update, Apple has resolved the error, ensuring full functionality of the security feature.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple is also said to be working on another update—iOS 17.6.2 with the build number 21G101 and/or 21G102. This is expected to be similar to the iOS 17.6.1 and will also be a security update. It is also likely to be the last iOS 17 update before the arrival of iOS 18 in September.
