Apple has confirmed plans to integrate US passports into its iPhone Wallet app later this year, expanding the platform’s support for digital identification documents. The company quietly announced the feature in footnotes detailing the latest iOS 26 updates, stating that “Digital ID will be coming later this year with US passports only.”

The news follows the tech giant’s announcement in June that its updated operating system would support digital passports approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), alongside augmented boarding passes.

Expanding Digital Wallet Ecosystem

Once the feature is deployed, likely through a future update to iOS, users will be able to store their US passports in the Wallet app, complementing existing support for driver’s licenses and state IDs. These digitised documents can be presented via iPhones and Apple Watches to prove identity or age at selected businesses and at certain TSA checkpoints in airports.

The move closely follows the trend established by rival Google, which launched a feature last year allowing users to present passports as an “ID pass” within Google Wallet.

To ensure security, the process of adding a passport to the Apple Wallet involves several biometric steps. Users are required to scan the physical document, complete a series of facial and head movements for a liveness check, and take a selfie, before final authentication via Face ID or Touch ID.

Despite the convenience of digital storage, the documents will have limited utility: digitised passports are not expected to be valid for use on international flights to or from the US.
