ASIS International Unveils Revised Standard On Investigations

The updated standard outlines comprehensive requirements and practical guidance for collecting and analysing information in investigative processes

ASIS International, a leading authority in security standards, has released a revised version of its American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved Investigations Standard, aimed at guiding organisations in conducting efficient, ethical and effective inquiries.

The updated standard outlines comprehensive requirements and practical guidance for collecting and analysing information in investigative processes. Applicable across both public and private sectors, the standard is intended to help internal teams and external contractors conduct suitable, cost-effective investigations that deliver value and align with professional best practices.

Developed by a global committee of security experts, the standard covers a wide range of elements critical to investigations. These include understanding organisational context, defining stakeholder roles, setting clear objectives and scope, gathering and managing information, and building processes that reduce errors while encouraging continual improvement.

“The revised Investigations Standard is a valuable tool that any security team should have in their toolkit,” said Patrick Cooper, PCI, Chair of the ASIS Investigations Standard Technical Committee and Director of the ASIS Professional Standards Board. “It provides detailed and practical guidance for individuals and organisations looking to conduct professional investigations in a global context.”

ASIS Vice President of Certification and Standards, Sue Carioti, CAE, CSP, added: “Great investigations don’t happen by accident—they happen by design. The standard offers investigators the assurance that their work will be effective, ethical, and continuously improving.”

ASIS International plans to release additional standards in 2025, including new frameworks for executive protection and a first-of-its-kind school security standard.
