Cyber audits to be conducted across all departments with support from national agencies
In response to a surge in cybercrime incidents, the Bihar government has nominated the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) as the nodal agency responsible for ensuring the cybersecurity of all state departments and installations.
The decision, announced through a statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department, follows a series of cyberattacks targeting critical government infrastructure. “In view of this, the state government has nominated the EOU as the nodal agency for ensuring cyber security of all departments and installations,” the statement said.
The government has outlined a comprehensive cybersecurity overhaul, starting with a cyber audit across all departments and installations. These audits aim to identify and rectify vulnerabilities in government websites, online services, and digital transactions. According to the statement, “The discrepancies or anomalies found during the audit will be removed at the earliest.”
The cyber audit exercise will be conducted with support from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), and other technical agencies. A special strategy for executing the audits is currently being finalised.
The government also plans to implement strict cyber protocols and promote cyber hygiene across departments. “Measures will be taken to maintain cyber protocol and also to check cyber hygiene in all the government departments in order to find out where the problem lies and also clear the entire situation, which would help in taking remedial measures,” the statement said.
Authorities acknowledged a significant rise in cybercrime, including targeted attacks on websites linked to Smart City projects, the Dial 112 emergency service, and other public utilities. These incidents have underlined the urgent need for a coordinated cybersecurity response.
Highlighting the growing threat posed by cybercriminal networks, the government said: “Cyber-related crime incidents have emerged as the biggest challenge. The cyber gangs’ nexus has also come to the fore and swift and stern action will be taken against them.”
Strategic planning is under way to guide the auditing process, with the aim of enhancing digital resilience across Bihar’s administrative ecosystem.
