CCTV Surveillance Boosts Security In Varanasi’s Rural Areas

Apart from street surveillance, the initiative also covers key public infrastructure

In a significant step towards strengthening rural surveillance, villages in 390 gram panchayats of Varanasi district have been equipped with CCTV cameras under the state’s Operation Trinetra initiative. The move is aimed at enhancing public safety and improving monitoring mechanisms in the region, especially in areas lacking consistent law enforcement presence.

A total of 2,190 night-vision CCTV cameras have been installed across these gram panchayats. According to Chief Development Officer Himanshu Nagpal, who is supervising the project, the cameras are powered by solar energy and come equipped with both sound recording and night-vision capabilities. “As many as 2,190 night-vision CCTV cameras have been installed in 390 gram panchayats of Varanasi…” he said.

Nagpal added that an additional 1,500 cameras are expected to be installed over the next two months in the remaining 229 gram panchayats. A central command and control room will be established at Vikas Bhavan in the district, from where all camera feeds can be monitored. On average, each gram panchayat is being equipped with five cameras strategically placed to cover main streets, entry points, and exit routes.

Apart from street surveillance, the initiative also covers key public infrastructure. “Panchayat Bhavans and government primary and upper primary schools in these gram panchayats have also been equipped with a CCTV camera each,” Nagpal added. These installations are intended to increase transparency and safety in local governance and education systems.

All CCTV feeds are being integrated with local police stations and offices of the block education officers. This ensures that law enforcement and education authorities are better informed and can respond more swiftly to any incidents. “Control rooms are being set up at every developmental block and the cameras will be connected with them for regular monitoring,” Nagpal said. He also noted that Block Development Officers (BDOs) would be able to oversee school activities directly through the live footage.

The introduction of solar-powered cameras addresses the issue of inconsistent electricity supply in some rural parts, ensuring uninterrupted operation. Additionally, the integration of sound recording adds another layer of detail to visual data, which could aid in investigations or conflict resolution at the local level.

By combining renewable technology with digital surveillance, Operation Trinetra aims to provide a sustainable and robust safety net for Varanasi’s rural population. While the project is still in its expansion phase, officials hope that the improved monitoring infrastructure will contribute to better administration, safer communities, and enhanced accountability across government-run institutions.
