In a bid to strengthen traffic enforcement and improve road safety, Delhi Police has begun trials of an advanced AI-powered 4D radar interceptor system. The technology, capable of automatically detecting traffic violations and issuing e-challans without human intervention, marks a significant step towards smarter traffic management in the city.
The interceptor, mounted atop police vehicles, is equipped with a 360-degree rotatable Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera. This camera provides comprehensive coverage, capturing number plates and monitoring traffic conditions across lanes. The system’s 4D radar technology uses advanced radio waves to simultaneously track multiple vehicles and measure their speed with high accuracy.
According to police officials, the AI system is programmed to detect a range of violations, including overspeeding, driving without seatbelts, using mobile phones while driving, riding without helmets, triple-riding on two-wheelers, pillion riding without protective headgear, and using non-standard or designer number plates.
“The AI-powered 4D radar interceptor will be mounted on top of police vehicles. It will generate automated e-challans for violations, eliminating the need for human intervention,” said a police source familiar with the project. The system is integrated with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), enabling real-time generation and dispatch of e-challans to offenders.
During its initial trial phase conducted on Friday, the interceptor generated 120 e-challans, highlighting its potential to streamline enforcement. Officials believe that the system will reduce dependency on manual monitoring, allowing traffic personnel to focus their efforts on broader public safety tasks.
“This will also reduce the need for intervention by traffic personnel, ensuring the best use of resources and minimising the chances of our police personnel getting hurt,” the source added.
The project is currently in the testing phase, with authorities evaluating its efficiency and feasibility. Full-scale implementation will follow after thorough assessments are completed to ensure the system meets operational requirements and public.
