As part of the new directive, Delhi University has laid down a detailed set of dos and don’ts for all personnel
Delhi University has significantly tightened security measures across its campuses, departments, and centres after receiving a stark warning from the Union Ministry of Education. The advisory, based on a threat assessment by central security agencies, has cautioned that higher education institutions are “strategically vulnerable” and could be targets for sabotage.
In a circular issued on July 29, the university’s joint registrar instructed all heads of departments to implement a series of new security protocols. These measures aim to secure physical assets, improve coordination with local police, and enforce strict vigilance.
New Protocols for Access and Surveillance
As part of the new directive, Delhi University has laid down a detailed set of dos and don’ts for all personnel. To control access, offices must now seek prior approval to open on weekends or outside of official working hours. No office is permitted to operate more than a half hour before or after its regular timings without notifying the estate section or security cell.
All visitors are now required to present a valid ID, with their entry and exit meticulously recorded in a dedicated register. The advisory also restricts vehicle parking beyond regular hours or on holidays without prior clearance.
The notification also specifically mentioned a recent spike in theft cases reported from North Campus buildings, adding a local urgency to the national security warning.
The university’s latest advisory is a direct response to a broader call from the Ministry of Education for universities nationwide to adopt more robust surveillance and safety measures. With a daily population of thousands of students and faculty members, Delhi University has emphasised that compliance with these new rules is crucial to maintaining a secure and safe learning environment.
