The Dominican Republic and the United States have signed an agreement to significantly expand the National Video Surveillance System of 911. The initiative, designed to strengthen public safety, will see the installation of new surveillance cameras and advanced equipment across the country. The collaboration is part of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative, a programme aimed at improving security infrastructure and emergency response systems in the region.
The agreement was formalised during a ceremony at the 911 National Emergency and Security System headquarters. Key figures in attendance included José Ignacio Paliza, Minister of the Presidency; Patricia Aguilera, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires; and Colonel Randolfo Rijo Gómez, Executive Director of the 911 system.
Minister Paliza highlighted the project’s ambition to double the number of surveillance cameras, with a particular focus on enhancing security in border provinces. He underlined the importance of modern technology in addressing national security challenges and improving emergency responses. “This collaboration demonstrates our commitment to protecting our citizens and fostering a safer environment,” Paliza said.
Colonel Rijo Gómez expressed gratitude for the support provided by the U.S., noting the progress made in operational capacity and technological advancements within the 911 system. He added that the expansion would enable better monitoring and a faster response to incidents across the country.
Rebecca Márquez, Director of the U.S. Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), praised the Dominican Republic’s 911 system as a model for the region. She emphasised its cutting-edge technology and adherence to best practices, which have set a benchmark for other nations.
The agreement underscores a strong bilateral commitment to modernising public safety infrastructure. The U.S. government’s continued support is expected to further enhance the Dominican Republic’s efforts to combat crime and ensure public safety, reaffirming the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared security challenges.
