New York is set to receive federal assistance to tackle a surge in drone sightings, Governor Kathy Hochul announced, following an incident that briefly shut down runways at Stewart International Airport last week. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is dispatching a drone detection system to New York in response to Hochul’s request for additional resources.

“In response to my calls for additional resources, our federal partners are sending a drone detection system to New York,” Hochul wrote on X, highlighting the need for state governments to have more authority to deal with the growing issue. Reports of similar sightings have been recorded across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Ohio, where Wright-Patterson Air Force Base was temporarily closed due to drones.

The uptick in drone activity has prompted officials to seek stronger regulatory frameworks. Hochul emphasised, “Congress must pass a law that will give us the power to deal directly with drones.” Her sentiments were echoed by Senator Chuck Schumer, who is advocating for legislation to empower local enforcement agencies to investigate unidentified aerial objects. Schumer has also requested the deployment of a drone detection system to New Jersey, which has reported the highest number of incidents so far.

While concerns about national security have been raised, officials have reassured the public that the sightings do not pose an immediate threat. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas confirmed the objects include both drones and manned aircraft often mistaken for them. He ruled out any foreign involvement and attributed the rise in reports to recent regulatory changes permitting drones to fly at night.

Nevertheless, the response from federal and state agencies has drawn criticism. Representative Mike Waltz questioned the Biden administration’s handling of the situation, stating, “Americans are finding it hard to believe we can’t figure out where these are coming from.” Waltz accused government agencies of being uncoordinated and called for a more decisive approach. Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Andy Kim urged authorities to communicate more effectively with the public to address anxieties surrounding the sightings.

Despite the reassurances, the lack of definitive answers has fuelled speculation. A claim by a New Jersey representative suggesting the drones were launched from an Iranian “mothership” was dismissed by the Pentagon as baseless. An FBI official suggested that public reaction to the sightings might have been exaggerated.

The federal government has pledged to work closely with state and local authorities to counter drone activity. As officials push for legislative action, the deployment of drone detection systems aims to alleviate public concerns and enhance the capability to manage this evolving challenge.
