In a move set to improve the travel experience for millions of passengers, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is introducing upgraded security screening systems across all terminals. The initiative aims to make airport security checks quicker and more efficient, particularly by reducing the need for travellers to unpack their bags.

Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), the organisation responsible for the design and infrastructure of Dubai’s aviation sector, has awarded a contract to Smiths Detection to install state-of-the-art checkpoint scanners at Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The technology being introduced is the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model-S, an advanced computed tomography (CT) scanner that offers high-resolution 3D imaging.

One of the most significant changes this technology brings is the elimination of the need to remove electronics or liquids from carry-on luggage at security checkpoints. This is expected to reduce wait times and create a smoother flow through security, making the process more convenient for passengers.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, emphasised the city’s commitment to aviation excellence. “Dubai continues to lead the world in aviation excellence by investing in the latest security screening technologies,” he said. “This project strengthens passenger safety, enhances the travel experience, and reinforces Dubai’s reputation as a global aviation hub.”

The new scanners have already been certified by international aviation bodies such as the United States’ Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC). Their rollout will begin soon and is expected to transform the current passenger screening process.

Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, highlighted the wider significance of the investment, stating, “The new scanners are an investment in operational efficiency and the safety of millions of travellers as Dubai builds the airport of the future.” He added that this initiative is part of Dubai’s broader strategy to adopt intelligent airport technologies and prepare for the transition to the upcoming USD 35 billion mega-hub at Al Maktoum International Airport (Dubai World Central) by the end of the decade.

As one of the world’s busiest airports, DXB handles more than 80 million passengers annually. The adoption of this technology marks another step forward in Dubai’s plan to future-proof its infrastructure and maintain its position as a leading global travel hub.
