The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating a cyberattack on Oracle that resulted in the theft of patient data, according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter.

Oracle, a leading technology firm, had alerted some of its healthcare clients earlier this month about a security breach in which hackers gained access to its servers and extracted patient information. The breach, which occurred sometime after 22 January, was reportedly part of a broader extortion campaign targeting multiple medical providers in the United States.

The FBI has declined to comment on the matter, and Oracle has yet to respond to requests for clarification from Reuters. It remains unclear how many patient records were affected or which healthcare providers were specifically targeted.

The breach is particularly significant given Oracle’s acquisition of U.S. healthcare IT firm Cerner Corp in 2022 for USD 28 billion. The deal strengthened Oracle’s foothold in the electronic health records industry and expanded the number of healthcare providers relying on its cloud platform. The acquisition also included a USD 16 billion contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which has previously faced scrutiny due to system outages and technical challenges.

According to reports, the cyberattack targeted older Cerner servers, compromising data that had not yet been migrated to Oracle’s cloud storage. Oracle reportedly became aware of the breach around 20 February.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident raises concerns about the security of healthcare data and the growing threats posed by cybercriminals seeking to exploit vulnerabilities in critical systems.
