Frankfurt Airport Pioneers Walkthrough Scanners For Passenger Security Checks

The scanners use advanced millimetre-wave technology to scan passengers while an avatar on a screen highlights any potentially dangerous objects in real-time

Frankfurt Airport has become the first in the world to adopt walk-through scanners as a regular feature for passenger security checks, setting a new benchmark in aviation security technology.

Following successful trials at Concourse A of Terminal 1 in 2023, the airport has now received authorisation from the German Federal Police to fully deploy the QPS Walk2000 360° scanners. The technology allows passengers to walk through security checkpoints at a normal pace without the need to pause in awkward positions for body scans.

The scanners use advanced millimetre-wave technology to scan passengers while an avatar on a screen highlights any potentially dangerous objects in real-time. If an alert is triggered, security personnel can focus on the specific area flagged, reducing the need for re-scanning and speeding up the security process.

Alexander Laukenmann, head of Fraport AG’s aviation division, highlighted the significance of the development:

“We’re the world’s first airport to set a new standard of passenger security with this 360° walkthrough scanner. During the test phase, we worked closely with the German Federal Police to optimise its operation and pave the way for its certification.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to improve the passenger experience by using the latest technologies to make checkpoints faster and easier to navigate while upholding our high standard of security. A special thank you goes to the whole project team.”

Frankfurt Airport, which handles around 18,000 departing passengers daily at the Concourse A checkpoint, is now planning to roll out the technology to additional security lanes in Terminal 1. The system will also be incorporated into the new Terminal 3, set to become operational in 2026 after several delays.

The scanners are supported by AI-based detection software, further enhancing their efficiency and accuracy. With the adoption of these walk-through scanners, Frankfurt Airport aims to strike a balance between improving passenger convenience and maintaining stringent security standards, paving the way for future technological advancements in airport security.
