German AI Firm Unveils Underwater Drone Network

The SG-1 Fathom drone is designed to be swarm-capable, allowing hundreds of units to patrol strategic underwater zones simultaneously

Germany-based defence AI company Helsing has revealed a new underwater drone surveillance system powered by artificial intelligence, designed to detect enemy submarines and surface vessels across vast stretches of ocean for months at a time.

The network, unveiled during a demonstration at Portsmouth Naval Base in England last week, is powered by Lura, Helsing’s proprietary AI engine. At the core of the system are SG-1 Fathom drones, designed to operate in swarms and remain submerged for up to three months.

Listening for threats beneath waves

Using a large-scale acoustic model, Lura processes audio data collected by the Fathom drones to detect and classify undersea threats based on the unique signatures they emit.

“Lura’s use of this model enables it to detect acoustic signatures 10 times quieter than other AI models,” Helsing said in a statement. The system can distinguish between individual vessels within the same class and processes signals “up to 40 times faster than humans”.

Military analysts have long used underwater acoustics to monitor adversary vessels, cataloguing the distinct noises produced by propulsion systems and even the bubbles left in their wake. Helsing claims its AI model drastically accelerates and enhances this traditional process, significantly improving response times and identification accuracy.

Each unit is built to endure the harsh underwater environment for extended durations—up to three months—providing long-term surveillance capabilities across vast maritime regions.

According to the company, the system is poised for operational deployment within the year. Potential areas for rollout include the North Sea and Baltic Sea, where NATO’s ongoing Baltic Sentry mission is focused on securing critical offshore infrastructure amid growing geopolitical tensions in the region.

AI & new era of maritime defence

The announcement comes as nations continue to invest heavily in AI-driven surveillance and defence technologies. With increasing undersea activity from rival powers, the pressure to monitor and protect subsea cables, pipelines, and shipping routes has never been greater.

Helsing’s new system reflects a broader trend: the integration of AI and autonomous systems to address military challenges where traditional human monitoring may be too slow, sparse, or costly.

As the underwater battlefield becomes increasingly contested, tools like Lura and the Fathom drones may mark the beginning of a new era in silent, persistent ocean surveillance.
