Google’s efforts to integrate AI into its search platform are already visible, with features like AI-generated summaries and an enhanced Lens tool that supports video-based searches
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, has signalled a transformative phase for the company, hinting at significant advancements in its search capabilities. Speaking at a recent summit, Pichai revealed that Google Search is set to evolve dramatically, promising users the ability to tackle more complex queries than ever before.
“I think we are going to be able to tackle more complex questions than ever before,” Pichai stated. He added that by early 2025, users would observe a marked improvement in the functionality of Google Search, which will deliver far more advanced and sophisticated responses compared to its current version.
During the summit, Pichai was also asked to address comments from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who recently remarked that Google should have been the “default winner” in the AI race. In response, Pichai challenged the assertion, suggesting a “side-by-side comparison” of AI models. He underscored Google’s strength as a pioneer with its proprietary technology, in contrast to Microsoft’s reliance on OpenAI. “They use someone else’s models,” Pichai said, framing Google as a leader in AI innovation.
Reflecting on the rapid advancements in AI, Pichai described the current moment as the beginning of a profound transformation. “We are in the earliest stages of a profound shift. There’s so much innovation ahead, and we are committed to staying at the forefront of this field,” he emphasised.
Google’s efforts to integrate AI into its search platform are already visible, with features like AI-generated summaries and an enhanced Lens tool that supports video-based searches. This groundwork is expected to expand further with the upcoming release of the company’s Gemini AI model, designed to compete with Microsoft, OpenAI, and emerging players like Perplexity in the growing AI-driven search market.
Beyond AI, Pichai also reflected on Google’s workplace culture, particularly its well-known free meal policy, which has often been viewed as a perk. The CEO shared a deeper perspective on the initiative, explaining how informal conversations over meals have sparked some of Google’s most innovative ideas.
“I can recall several times, when I was working at Google early on, being in cafes, meeting someone else, talking and getting excited about something. So, it sparks creativity,” Pichai said. He highlighted how these casual interactions foster collaboration and fuel the company’s culture of innovation.
As Google navigates its ambitious roadmap, Pichai’s remarks underline the company’s determination to stay ahead in the competitive AI landscape while maintaining its ethos of collaboration and creativity.
