Google CEO Sundar Pichai Unveils Global AI Education Initiative At UN Summit

While celebrating the benefits of AI, Pichai also acknowledged the risks, particularly the misuse of technology through deepfakes

At the UN Summit of the Future, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced a major initiative to advance artificial intelligence (AI) education and training globally. Describing AI as “the most transformative technology yet,” Pichai emphasised its potential to address critical global challenges.

He outlined four key areas where AI could contribute significantly: improving information accessibility in native languages, accelerating scientific research, monitoring and providing early alerts for climate disasters, and driving economic development. Pichai highlighted AI’s role in bridging gaps and fostering growth in these areas.

While celebrating the benefits of AI, Pichai also acknowledged the risks, particularly the misuse of technology through deepfakes. However, his address did not touch on AI’s potential impact on climate change, keeping the focus on its positive contributions to global development.

Pichai announced Google’s new $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund, aimed at preventing an “AI divide” and ensuring access to AI education in communities worldwide. The fund will partner with local non-profits and NGOs to bring AI training to underserved regions, promoting inclusivity in AI advancements.

Pichai also stressed the need for “smart product regulation” to manage the risks of AI without restricting its benefits. He warned that poorly designed regulations could widen the global divide in AI access, underscoring Google’s commitment to promoting responsible and equitable use of AI technologies.
