Google Chrome has upgraded its existing Enhanced Protection feature by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to provide real-time protection against potentially harmful websites, downloads, and browser extensions. The updated feature has been rolled out to Chrome’s stable channel across all platforms following three months of testing in the Canary version.
The Enhanced Protection feature, part of Chrome’s Safe Browsing security suite, has been in place for several years. However, the latest update incorporates AI capabilities to enhance its functionality. Previously, Chrome offered proactive protection against known malicious or suspicious websites, but with AI integration, the feature is now expected to offer more dynamic, real-time protection.
While Google has not disclosed the technical details of the AI implementation, the updated feature is likely designed to detect emerging threats by analysing patterns and behaviours of websites in real-time. This would allow Chrome to warn users about potentially dangerous sites that have not yet been flagged in Google’s threat database.
In addition to website protection, the AI-powered Enhanced Protection feature performs comprehensive scans of downloads to identify suspicious files. The integration of AI aims to strengthen Chrome’s ability to prevent users from inadvertently downloading harmful software.
However, Google has clarified that enabling Enhanced Protection will result in browsing data being sent to the company to facilitate better threat detection. The feature is disabled by default, and users can activate it by navigating to Settings > Security on Windows, Android, and iOS devices.
