Omnilert, a leading provider of AI-enabled gun-detection technology, has released its 2024 Gun Violence Statistics report, providing an in-depth analysis of gun violence trends across the United States. While there are some encouraging signs, such as a reduction in overall deaths and injuries, alarming statistics around school shootings and mass shootings underscore the ongoing challenge of ensuring public safety in the country.

The report reveals that gun violence resulted in 40,886 deaths and 31,652 injuries in 2024, reflecting a 9 per cent decline compared to 2023. Among these, over 5,200 victims were children and teens. Additionally, the number of mass shootings dropped by 24 per cent, from 659 incidents in 2023 to 503 last year. However, the data paints a troubling picture for schools: 2024 saw 330 school shootings, a figure that is more than 107 per cent higher than any annual count recorded in the last 25 years. Moreover, gun-related deaths and injuries on K-12 school properties rose by 7 per cent, impacting 267 individuals compared to 249 the previous year.

Dave Fraser, CEO of Omnilert, expressed a mixed sentiment about the findings. “The fact that there was an overall decrease in deaths and injuries is absolutely a step in the right direction, but the increased numbers in our schools and an average of 112 deaths in the U.S. each day due to gun violence is not acceptable,” he said. “Every fatality is one too many, and with solutions now available to help prevent these tragedies, it is possible to start reversing all the trends if we work together and take a layered approach to mitigating gun violence.”

Economic Cost Of Gun Violence

The report also sheds light on the staggering financial burden of gun violence on the U.S. economy. The annual cost is estimated at over $557 billion, translating to approximately USD1,700 per American. This expenditure could otherwise be redirected to critical areas like healthcare, education, or infrastructure development.

A significant portion of the economic toll stems from losses in revenue and productivity. Firearm injuries are estimated to cost private employers $535 million annually nationwide. Moreover, the healthcare expenses for non-fatal firearm injuries are steep, with the first year of care for each survivor averaging $30,000.

Cities across the country are also facing enormous financial strain. For instance, Columbus, Ohio, incurs nearly $500 million annually due to gun violence. A single homicide in the city costs taxpayers $2.1 million, while a non-fatal shooting amounts to $738,000 in public expenses.

Call For Layered Approach

Omnilert’s report emphasises that no single solution can effectively address gun violence. Instead, it advocates for a layered approach combining various measures. These include technologies such as AI-enabled gun detection, the deployment of security personnel and school resource officers, better training and planning, enhanced access controls, and the construction of physical barriers like perimeter fences.

The report also highlights the importance of community involvement and collaboration among schools, businesses, government agencies, and technology providers. By adopting a comprehensive strategy, stakeholders can work together to create safer environments across schools, places of worship, healthcare facilities, government offices, retail spaces, and other public areas.

While the decline in overall deaths and injuries is a hopeful sign, the report serves as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges in tackling gun violence. With the rising number of incidents in schools and the enormous economic toll, a proactive and collaborative approach remains essential to building safer communities.
