The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a new cybersecurity centre aimed at advancing both fundamental and applied research to foster innovation in the field. The Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust, and Reliability (CyStar), inaugurated on October 8, 2024, is set to focus on crucial areas such as blockchain, AI model security, cryptography, quantum security, and IoT security.

CyStar is designed to develop a robust strategy to address the growing cybersecurity challenges posed by advancements in AI and the emerging post-quantum era. The centre’s primary focus is safeguarding critical national infrastructure while offering a comprehensive defence against sophisticated technological threats.

In its efforts to tackle these challenges, CyStar will collaborate with both global and local academic institutions, industry partners, and research bodies. This collaborative approach aims to equip students, professionals, and researchers with the skills and expertise needed to address evolving security issues. The centre’s research will benefit sectors like finance, healthcare, automotive, and electronics by addressing their specific security concerns.

Among CyStar’s key partners are the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Ministry of Education, and a range of industry players such as Vitesco Technologies, Kaspersky, IDBI Bank, and LG India. Other collaborators include Saptang Labs, Algorand, the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research, and the National Security Coordination Secretariat.

According to an official statement from IIT Madras, “The mission of CyStar is to push the boundaries of cybersecurity through innovative research and education. Recognising that cybersecurity demands a multi-disciplinary approach, the research team at CyStar is diverse, encompassing a wide range of expertise.”

CyStar aims to create a collaborative knowledge ecosystem where industry leaders, academic experts, and government institutions can work together. The centre’s goal is to apply cutting-edge research to real-world cybersecurity challenges, helping to develop practical products and services that enhance digital security across industries.
