In a move to strengthen bilateral cooperation and support public safety, India will supply vehicles to the Sri Lankan police under a grant programme, the Indian High Commission in Colombo announced on Wednesday.
The initiative, valued at Sri Lankan Rupees 300 million (approximately USD 920,000), aims to enhance law enforcement capabilities in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. An official memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and D.W.R.B. Seneviratne, the senior-most bureaucrat in Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Public Security.
The project involves the delivery of at least 80 single-cab vehicles, along with spare parts and accessories, to police stations across the Northern Province. According to an official release, the vehicles will address critical logistical requirements, bolstering citizen safety and aiding in the maintenance of law and order in the region.
“India’s people-centric development cooperation initiatives, tailored to the needs of Sri Lankan citizens and aligned with the priorities of the Sri Lankan government, continue to make a tangible difference in the daily lives of people across all 25 districts,” the High Commission stated.
Over the years, India has undertaken numerous development projects across various sectors in Sri Lanka, including housing, healthcare, education, fisheries, transport, renewable energy, and agriculture. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to promote inclusive growth and foster goodwill between the two neighbouring nations.
The vehicles supplied under this programme are expected to play a pivotal role in improving police responsiveness and ensuring safer communities in Sri Lanka.
