India & US Reaffirm Commitment To Strengthen Digital Connectivity

The 2024 ICT Working Group discussions also included private sector representatives from both nations

India and the United States have reiterated their dedication to fostering secure, reliable, and interoperable digital connectivity and ICT infrastructure during the recent US-India Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Working Group meeting held in New Delhi.

The discussions highlighted areas of collaboration, including advancements in 5G and 6G networks, artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border data flows, and the promotion of Open Radio Access Networks (Open RAN). A joint statement from the US Department of State underlined the shared commitment to supporting the growth of the digital economy through open and secure ICT frameworks.

“The United States and India renewed our shared commitment to open, interoperable, reliable, and secure digital connectivity and ICT infrastructure to support the growth of the digital economy,” stated the US Department of State.

Collaboration Highlights

The 2024 ICT Working Group discussions also included private sector representatives from both nations. The dialogue focused on promoting secure and resilient wireless networks through open and interoperable approaches like Open RAN, quantum communications, and fostering collaboration in AI. Both sides emphasised the importance of data protection and privacy to bolster cross-border data flows.

Efforts were also directed at promoting supplier diversity in telecommunications to reduce costs, spur innovation, and expand trusted ICT options. The proposed establishment of an Open RAN Academy in India was a key highlight, reflecting a shared vision for developing scalable and sustainable telecommunications solutions.

Additionally, the countries committed to enhancing global connectivity by supporting resilient undersea cables and satellite systems. They also agreed on developing principles, standards, and research for 6G networks while continuing to coordinate efforts in multilateral forums on AI safety and responsible technology use.

Global Digital Development Partnership

India and the US expressed their intent to operationalise the US-India Global Digital Development Partnership, aimed at facilitating joint development projects in emerging markets across Africa and Asia. This collaboration will focus on leveraging emerging technologies from the public and private sectors of both nations.

The two governments also reaffirmed their support for establishing a Social Impact Fund for implementing Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in the Global South.

Visa Processing & Trade Expansion

Recognising the contributions of professional cross-border movement to their economic and technological partnerships, both nations highlighted the importance of efficient visa processing. They also discussed addressing barriers to trade and investment in the ICT sector, including certification and testing requirements for IoT devices.

This collaborative effort underscores the mutual commitment of India and the United States to advancing global digital connectivity and ensuring a secure and inclusive digital ecosystem.
