Indian Embassies Confirm E-passport Rollout In 2025

The high-tech e-passport, designed to enhance security and streamline immigration checks, is set to be issued from next year, according to a clarification from the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi

The rollout of India’s highly anticipated e-passport is on track to begin in 2025, according to clarifications issued by Indian embassies abroad, which sought to address public confusion regarding the new travel document.

Confirming the timeline, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi stated that the new generation of passports will be issued starting from the next calendar year. However, officials were quick to quell speculation that the change would be immediate or expensive.

The e-passport will be designed to enhance security features and smooth the immigration process at airports globally. Unlike current paper-based passports, the e-passport will contain an embedded electronic chip capable of storing the bearer’s personal data.

Crucially, the embassy confirmed that there will be no immediate change in the fees charged for the new e-passports. Furthermore, for the initial phase of the rollout, applicants will not be required to provide biometrics specifically for the new document.

The move to the chip-enabled passport is part of India’s ongoing effort to modernise its travel documents, making them compliant with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The high-tech features are expected to significantly reduce the risk of passport forgery and identity theft.

The clarification from the diplomatic missions comes as travellers often rely on updated information regarding passport services from their local consulates and embassies.
