The Indian and Vietnam Coast Guards have pledged to enhance their collaboration in maritime law enforcement and search and rescue operations following a high-level meeting in Hanoi. The discussions, held on Wednesday, focused on forging a united front against transnational maritime crime and ensuring the safety and security of the region’s seas.

The 6th High-Level Meeting (HLM), co-chaired by Additional Director General Anand Prakash Badola of the Indian Coast Guard and Major General Vu Trung Kien of the Vietnam Coast Guard, reaffirmed the two nations’ commitment to the 2015 Memorandum of Understanding on Coast Guard Cooperation.

Discussions centred on bolstering cooperation across a range of critical areas, including marine pollution response, maritime law enforcement, and capacity building. Both sides placed a strong emphasis on combating increasingly sophisticated transnational crimes, such as smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal fishing. The delegations reviewed recent professional exchanges and ship visits, agreeing to continue joint initiatives aimed at improving their operational synergy and interoperability.

The meeting underscored the importance of coordinated search and rescue (SAR) operations and joint mechanisms for responding to marine pollution incidents. These measures are seen as vital for protecting both seafarers and the marine environment.

In a joint statement, both Coast Guards stressed that regular interactions and training programs are essential for building mutual trust and operational effectiveness. The outcome of the meeting was described as a clear demonstration of a shared commitment to working together in a spirit of friendship and cooperation to ensure the region’s maritime security, safety, and environmental sustainability.
