Israel Deploys Advanced Security Systems In West Bank

Israeli Army Radio revealed that the occupation forces have begun installing sophisticated high-tech surveillance systems at strategic points

The Israeli army is set to deploy advanced technological security systems in the occupied West Bank, a move that has sparked growing concerns about the region potentially becoming a major conflict zone, according to reports from The New Arab citing Israeli media.

Israeli Army Radio revealed that the occupation forces have begun installing sophisticated high-tech surveillance systems at strategic points, including the entrances to illegal settlements. These installations are reportedly aimed at “preventing infiltration.” However, critics argue that these measures exacerbate tensions and further infringe upon the rights and safety of Palestinian civilians.

Advanced Surveillance & Weapon Systems

The new systems include surveillance towers and remote-controlled weapons capable of firing live ammunition. Critics have raised alarms over the potential for fatal errors, particularly for innocent civilians who could be misidentified as threats. One of the key technologies being deployed is the “Roeh-Yoreh” (see-fire) system, developed by Rafael Combat Systems.

The Roeh-Yoreh comprises a tower equipped with advanced surveillance capabilities and a remotely operated weapon system. While this technology has been utilised in Gaza since 2008, it is now being deployed in the West Bank by the 636th Reconnaissance Unit.

Increased Surveillance Measures

Activists have expressed concerns about the scale and scope of surveillance. Bashar Qaryouti, an anti-settlement activist, described the deployment of laser-operated surveillance cameras, drones, and gates at Palestinian village entrances as a means of tightening Israeli control over the region.

“These measures allow the Israeli army to track Palestinian movements in real-time, creating an environment of constant surveillance and tension,” Qaryouti said. He also highlighted the expansion of surveillance devices, now positioned at most road junctions, enabling detailed monitoring of anyone approaching checkpoints.

Broader Context

The deployment of these technologies comes amidst heightened Israeli military raids on Palestinian cities and towns and frequent attacks by armed settlers. Concurrently, the Israeli government has been pushing for the annexation of the West Bank and expanding illegal settlements. Some officials have called for treating the region with the same stringent control measures imposed on Gaza.

As tensions escalate, human rights advocates warn that the increasing militarisation of the West Bank could lead to more violence and further complicate efforts to achieve peace in the region. While Israeli officials justify these measures as necessary for security, critics argue that they deepen the occupation and undermine the rights of Palestinians living under constant surveillance.

This development underscores the volatile situation in the West Bank, with implications for both regional stability and the daily lives of its residents.
