Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict directives for a robust security framework
In anticipation of the Mahakumbh 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, the Prayagraj police have implemented extensive security measures to ensure the safety of over 450 million visitors expected to attend the event. The festival, which occurs once every 12 years, will take place from 13 January to 26 February.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict directives for a robust security framework, particularly for key routes connecting Prayagraj to neighbouring districts. Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar confirmed that comprehensive arrangements are in place, including advanced surveillance powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and a multi-layered security system to safeguard the event.
Enhanced Security Framework
To secure the sprawling venue and manage the influx of pilgrims, a circular security system has been established with 102 checkpoints along seven critical routes. These checkpoints are manned by over 1,000 personnel, including 71 inspectors, 234 sub-inspectors, and 645 constables. In addition, 113 Home Guards and Prantiya Rakshak Dal (PRD) jawans have been deployed to assist with monitoring and crowd control.
DGP Prashant Kumar highlighted the importance of vigilance, stating, “Uttar Pradesh Police is committed to ensuring the safety of all participants. Our comprehensive strategy involves advanced technology and skilled personnel to manage the vast crowds effectively.”
High-Tech Surveillance
A web of surveillance, powered by AI, has been implemented to monitor the gathering. The area is equipped with 2,700 AI-enabled cameras capable of analysing crowd density and detecting unusual activities. Additionally, 113 underwater drones have been deployed to monitor waterways, ensuring the safety of pilgrims around the Ganges.
The police have also introduced five Vajra vehicles, 10 aerial drones, and four anti-sabotage teams for round-the-clock patrolling. Advanced underwater drones will further enhance security by scanning submerged areas, while AI cameras will help identify potential threats in real-time.
Mock Drills & Collaborative Efforts
In preparation for the event, mock drills have been conducted involving the Uttar Pradesh Police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and National Security Guard (NSG). These exercises are aimed at testing readiness and refining responses to potential emergencies.
The Uttar Pradesh Police has termed the multi-layered security setup as an “impenetrable security chakravyuh,” designed to protect key installations, including temples, akhadas, and public spaces.
Smooth Crowd Management
Given the sheer size of the gathering, managing the movement of people and vehicles is critical. Authorities have established checkpoints for thorough inspections of vehicles and individuals. AI-driven cameras will provide real-time updates on crowd flow, aiding in the prevention of overcrowding or stampedes.
DGP Kumar emphasised the importance of collaboration between security forces and technology, noting, “With AI surveillance and the involvement of specialised teams, we aim to provide a safe and seamless experience for devotees.”
Unified Effort For Grand Event
The Mahakumbh 2025 is not only a spiritual event but also a logistical challenge of immense proportions. With advanced security measures and technological integration, the Uttar Pradesh government and police are working tirelessly to ensure a safe and organised event for all participants.
As preparations continue, Prayagraj is poised to welcome millions of devotees from across the globe, offering a secure and spiritually enriching experience.
