Misinformation Surge Sparks Online Surveillance In India

In response, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) and cybercrime wings across the state’s three commissionerates have increased round-the-clock monitoring

Indian authorities have intensified online surveillance and cyber patrolling in response to a surge in provocative and misleading content circulating on social media amid heightened tensions along the India–Pakistan border.

Police officials have warned that even a single anti-national or misleading post could now result in legal action, as the state moves to curb misinformation designed to inflame public sentiment and threaten national security.

Sources say a growing number of users are sharing doctored visuals—including deepfake videos and unrelated footage from the Ukraine–Russia and Israel–Hamas conflicts—falsely linking them to recent developments at the India–Pakistan border. These posts, often designed to provoke unrest or spread fear, are being widely circulated on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

In response, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) and cybercrime wings across the state’s three commissionerates have increased round-the-clock monitoring. Their efforts are focused on identifying posts that incite communal hatred, spread misinformation, or undermine national unity.

Acting on directives from the Union Home Ministry, X recently suspended around 8,000 accounts found to be disseminating false or inflammatory content.

As part of the crackdown, authorities are now carrying out comprehensive cyber patrolling operations, including analysing user history and online behaviour. Officials said that in cases where a pattern of sharing provocative or misleading content is detected, police may file cases suo motu, without waiting for a formal complaint.

A public advisory has also been issued urging citizens to be vigilant online. The guidelines recommend:

  • Verifying any content related to national security before sharing;
  • Referring to government-run fact-checking portals for accurate information;
  • Avoiding posts that may cause panic or disturb public order;
  • Reporting suspicious or fake content to police or via emergency helpline services.

Officials warn that those found involved in such activities may face serious long-term consequences, including legal proceedings and potential damage to career prospects.
