New Technology Enhances Safety At Dallas Love Field Airport

Indra, a company based in Madrid, Spain, and a major player in air traffic facility technology, has recently completed the initial deployment of its Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) system at Love Field

Recent close calls between airborne and taxiing aircraft at U.S. airports have highlighted the urgent need to reduce such incidents by ensuring that aircraft maintain safe spacing at all times. A key part of this safety effort is ensuring that air traffic controllers are fully aware of runway activities. Dallas Love Field is leading the way with the implementation of new technology designed to enhance this awareness.

Indra, a company based in Madrid, Spain, and a major player in air traffic facility technology, has recently completed the initial deployment of its Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) system at Love Field. Indra’s AeroBOSS technology aims to improve situational awareness for air traffic controllers and reduce the risk of runway incursions, a problem that has seen a global increase in recent years.

AeroBOSS utilises ADS-B surveillance technology to collect data on an aircraft’s position, combined with satellite connections. This data is then transmitted via 5G networks, providing real-time reports on aircraft movements to air traffic controllers. According to Indra, this system “allows air traffic controllers to obtain a comprehensive picture of the situation and the position of aircraft on the tarmac and runway to effectively prevent incidents and ensure airport and passenger safety.”

Javier Centeno, superintendent of airside operations at Love Field, explained to Fox 4 DFW that the new technology “will actually let the air traffic controllers see the aircraft on the ground on the radar. See them all the way to the runway.” As of last week, Love Field is one of only four airports in the United States equipped with the new SAI system.

Indra anticipates that many large and medium-sized airports across the U.S. will adopt its technology “in the coming years.” Additionally, the company has renewed its exclusive agreement to supply the FAA with Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) systems, which help guide aircraft during their approach to the airport and along their routes. Indra has already delivered over 250 sets of this equipment. The company also provides air navigation aid systems to the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy.

With these advancements, Dallas Love Field and other airports are taking significant steps toward enhancing air traffic control and ensuring safer air travel for all passengers.
